Anxiety & Addiction

Most people will suffer from anxiety at some point in their daily lives.  It is perfectly normal to feel anxious in the lead up to a big event or if you were under pressure; in fact, having a little anxiety can prove useful in some instances, as it sharpens your senses by releasing adrenalin and other chemicals into your body.  This is our body’s response to perceived danger and is referred to as the “fight or flight” mechanism. Anxiety becomes a problem when it is moderate to severe, frequently occurs, or lasts for prolonged periods.  When this happens, the anxiety becomes a disorder and can have a debilitating effect on the individual’s life.  The root cause of the individual’s illness is in their thinking, as this is what perceives a threat and so triggers the release of flight or flight chemicals.  The individual then starts to suffer from physical symptoms, which can ultimately result in a panic attack; this is a very intense and uncomfortable experience.

At Sanctuary Lodge, we offer treatment for different types of anxiety disorder including, generalised anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress syndrome, panic disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. All of these disorders are characterised by the sufferer experiencing high levels of anxiety on a frequent and prolonged basis.  Anxiety is very unpleasant to experience and can have a long-term impact on the sufferer’s mental and physical health if left untreated.

Symptoms and treatment of anxiety disorders

The usual treatment prescribed by doctors for anxiety is some kind of sedative; however, this only treats the symptoms and not the root cause of the anxiety.  Sedatives can only be used for a short period, as these are extremely addictive; so on finishing the course, the sufferer’s symptoms are likely to return. Sanctuary Lodge offers a long-term solution to anxiety using a full programme of proven treatment therapies tailored to the individuals need. The treatment we offer will equip the individual with ways of dealing with their anxiety by challenging and changing their cognitive thought patterns.  We will also use a combination of holistic therapies to assist the individual in finding natural methods of relaxing. Sanctuary Lodge also offer trauma therapy, which is a specialist therapy very effective in treating individuals whose anxiety has resulted from past traumatic events.  Our staff have vast experience in treating individuals suffering with trauma related anxiety, so the individual will benefit from receiving world-class treatment at a fraction of the usual cost.
