The advice to avoid alcohol while on antibiotics is one of those things most people have heard but few people fully understand. Some antibiotics genuinely do interact with alcohol in ways that can make you very unwell, while others carry no real risk at all if you drink in moderation.
Knowing which category your medication falls into matters, because the blanket “no drinking” rule that gets passed around isn’t always accurate. This page breaks down which antibiotics you actually need to worry about, what the risks look like, and how long to wait before drinking once your course is finished.

Can you drink whilst on antibiotics?
The short answer is that it depends on which antibiotic you’ve been prescribed. There’s a common assumption that alcohol and antibiotics should never mix under any circumstances, but that isn’t quite right.
The NHS states that drinking in moderation is unlikely to cause problems with the most commonly prescribed antibiotics. A review of the evidence confirmed that antibiotics like amoxicillin and penicillin can be used alongside moderate alcohol consumption without any dangerous interaction.
That said, there are specific antibiotics where alcohol must be avoided completely. The reactions these can cause range from very unpleasant to potentially dangerous, and the next section covers each of them.
Which antibiotics are dangerous to mix with alcohol?
Most antibiotics won’t cause a harmful reaction if you have a drink, but the following are clear exceptions. If you’ve been prescribed any of these, understanding why alcohol needs to be avoided is important.
When metronidazole and alcohol are combined, it can cause what’s known as a disulfiram-like reaction. This happens because the drug interferes with how your body breaks down alcohol, leading to a build-up of a toxic byproduct called acetaldehyde.
The effects of this can include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, a racing heartbeat, hot flushes and difficulty breathing.
Even small amounts of alcohol, including the alcohol found in certain medicines or mouthwashes, can potentially trigger this reaction. The NHS advises avoiding alcohol completely while taking metronidazole and for 48 hours after finishing the course.
Linezolid is a weak inhibitor of monoamine oxidase, which means it can interact with tyramine, a substance found in fermented alcoholic drinks like beer and wine. If tyramine builds up in the body, it can cause a sudden and potentially dangerous spike in blood pressure.
For this reason, fermented alcoholic drinks in particular should be avoided while taking linezolid, though the safest approach is to avoid alcohol altogether during the course.
In people with a history of heavy or regular drinking, doxycycline can become less effective because alcohol speeds up how quickly the body breaks the drug down. This can mean the antibiotic doesn’t do its job properly, which may extend the infection or require a second course of treatment.
While this is uncommon, the possibility is enough for it to be flagged as a precaution. If you’ve been prescribed co-trimoxazole, checking with your GP or pharmacist about alcohol is a sensible step.
How long to wait before drinking again
For most antibiotics, there’s no specific wait time, but once the course is finished and you’re feeling well, moderate drinking is generally considered safe. But for the antibiotics that carry a direct risk, the timelines matter and they vary depending on the drug.
- For metronidazole, the recommendation is to avoid alcohol during treatment and for at least 48 hours after the last dose.
- For tinidazole, that window extends to at least 72 hours.
- For linezolid, fermented alcoholic drinks should be avoided for up to two weeks after treatment ends.
If you’re unsure about your specific antibiotic, your pharmacist is the quickest source of reliable advice.
Why alcohol can slow your recovery even without a direct interaction
Even if your antibiotic isn’t one of the ones listed above, drinking while your body is fighting an infection can still work against you. Alcohol suppresses the immune system, which is exactly what needs to be running at full capacity while you’re unwell. Drinking can also cause dehydration, which makes recovery harder and can amplify common antibiotic side effects like nausea and dizziness.
Your liver is also worth taking into consideration, as its responsible for processing both alcohol and most antibiotics, and asking it to handle both at the same time puts it under additional strain.
For a short course, this is unlikely to cause lasting harm for most people, but giving your body a break from alcohol while it’s working through medication and an infection makes practical sense.
What if going without alcohol feels difficult?
A standard course of antibiotics usually lasts between 7 and 14 days, and for most people, going without alcohol for that period is straightforward. But if the thought of not drinking for a couple of weeks feels uncomfortable, or if you’ve found yourself drinking during a course of antibiotics despite knowing you shouldn’t, that’s worth paying attention to.
Difficulty stepping away from alcohol, even temporarily and for a clear medical reason, can be an early sign that your relationship with drinking has moved beyond casual use. It doesn’t necessarily mean you have an addiction, but it does suggest that your drinking habits may be worth looking at more closely.

- Do you feel anxious at the thought of going without alcohol for two weeks?
- Have you tried to cut down on your drinking before and found that you couldn’t?

- Has your drinking caused concern for someone close to you?
These aren’t diagnostic questions, but they can be a useful starting point for an honest conversation with yourself about whether your drinking has become something that needs addressing.
