Aftercare is the term used for the range of our recovery-centred services, activities and treatments you can utilise once your initial treatment programme has finished. At Sanctuary Lodge, we are passionate about the continuation of treatment long after you have successfully completed rehab. We want to support you along every step of the way, which is why we provide one year of free aftercare.
Studies have shown that the longer you continue attending therapy sessions and making the most out of support groups available to you, the more likely you are to maintain recovery (1, 2, 3). As such, we have developed our ground-breaking UKAT Alumni programme. This gives those who have successfully completed our rehab programmes a lifelong recovery network that covers every angle of connecting our clients to ongoing support.
Aftercare for the Prevention of Addiction Relapse
During rehab, you usually go through detox and a range of therapies to provide a foundation for long-term addiction recovery. That is the beginning of your journey. The most important part now is relapse prevention in your daily life despite triggers or challenging circumstances.
Don’t worry, you don’t have to do this alone. There are a host of support groups and therapy options to help you recover long term. If you choose to attend treatment at Sanctuary Lodge, we provide one year of free aftercare, as well as our innovative UKAT Alumni lifelong support network.
How does aftercare work?
Aftercare is not just one type of therapy; it encompasses all the ways you maintain your recovery. Once you have successfully completed a rehabilitation course, the aftercare stage begins. Sanctuary Lodge is part of the UKAT group of rehab clinics, which are spread across the UK. You can continue aftercare at any of these facilities.
To keep the momentum of recovery going, once rehab has finished, we enter you into our innovative scheme called UKAT Alumni. This involves regular phone contact with our dedicated Alumni team, monthly newsletters, access to our exclusive Facebook support group and free recovery events throughout the year. Our recovery events include adventure days out, summer barbecues and Christmas parties. This is an opportunity for you to meet and network with other healthy, positive like-minded people who know exactly what you’re going through.
When does aftercare take place?
Aftercare services become available to those who successfully completes one of our rehab treatment programmes. One of the most important differences between what we offer and what the NHS offers as outpatient services is our yearlong focused aftercare programme and lifelong support network. Long-term support is known to be one of the most effective forms of relapse prevention. The value of consistency, from being looked after by the same treatment group, really cannot be underestimated.

Aftercare and support groups
The more people that attend our relapse prevention groups and therapy, the better! You can never surround yourself with too much support and guidance while trying to maintain your recovery. While we do provide second-to-none aftercare, we would always still recommend that you attend your regular support groups in your local authority. The more perspectives, advice and insight you can gain, the better chance you have of not only maintaining your recovery, but also thriving and building out the exact future you want to make for yourself.
Nationwide support groups, such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous and Cocaine Anonymous, are effective and free of charge. Sharing experiences and listening to how others maintain their long-term recovery is always inspiring and informative. As one of the most traditional forms of therapy, it is one of the most effective.
