Holistic Programme at Sanctuary Lodge
Here at Sanctuary Lodge, our clients will have the opportunity to benefit from some of our holistic treatment therapies whilst engaging in their rehabilitation programme. The therapies we offer are detailed below, along with some of the benefits.
Holistic therapy is an alternative to more traditional medicines used to treat physical symptoms and illnesses. Holistic treats the person as a ‘whole’ rather than just focusing on one aspect of the individual’s malady. The concept of holistic medicine and therapy treats all aspects of the individuals being in the physical, psychological, and spiritual sense. The holistic therapies we offer at Sanctuary Lodge are completely natural and do not involve any chemicals. These can be incorporated to enhance detoxification and rehabilitation as they help to heal emotional problems and ease physical symptoms.
Meditation is an important part of many individuals’ recovery. It helps to relax and focus the mind. Meditation also helps physically by regulating breathing, lowering blood pressure, and relaxing the muscles. Spiritually it can help to unlock difficult emotions and bring a sense of peace and calmness. This practice is particularly beneficial to those suffering from anxiety, depression, and chaotic thinking. There are many different types of meditation, including mindfulness and guided visualisation; here our client’s will be introduced to the practice of meditation so that they can experience first-hand the many benefits that it brings.
This practice involves inserting the tips of pins or needles into the meridians of the ear. It works on the principle that the ear contains a micro-system that connects directly to different parts of the brain. By stimulating these points, signals or electrical impulses are sent to the brain. The brain in turn stimulates an action in a part of the body that the point is connected to. Auricular acupuncture has been used successfully as a holistic practice in the substance misuse field to aid the detoxification process by helping to flush the body of toxins. The practice also stimulates natural endorphins, a chemical naturally produced within the body that helps to lift mood, reduce anxiety and cravings, and aids restful sleep. Auricular acupuncture is a proven method in the addiction treatment field.
Art Therapy provides our clients with a therapeutic and non-threatening way of expressing their thoughts and emotions. Often, individuals come to us with a dysfunctional way of expressing emotions or suppressing them. Art therapy encourages the exploration of emotions through creativity. This can provide them with a real insight and sense of freedom as they find a medium in which they can identify difficult emotions. This expressive therapy helps our clients to get in contact with their inner self. It also provides them with a safe, enjoyable, and relaxing outlet without the need for alcohol, drugs, or destructive behaviours. As they learn that there are creative ways in which they can safely express their emotions and share their perception on life, clients will gain a real sense of satisfaction and increased self-esteem.
